Teeth, Jaws, and Muscles in Balance

Functional Therapy

Headaches, jaw clicking, teeth grinding—these symptoms are often caused by a dysfunction in the masticatory system. We identify the cause and treat it in a targeted, sustainable, and gentle manner.

What is functional therapy?

The masticatory system is a complex interplay of teeth, temporomandibular joints, muscles, and the nervous system. If this system becomes unbalanced—due to stress, malocclusion, teeth grinding, or uneven pressure—it can lead to symptoms that extend far beyond the mouth. Functional therapy analyzes this interaction holistically and treats not only the symptoms but also their underlying causes.

Functional Diagnostics

We begin with a thorough analysis: We examine your temporomandibular joints, muscles, bite alignment, and tooth contacts—both clinically and, if necessary, using digital measurement systems. This gives us a precise picture of the cause of your symptoms.

Bite splint (occlusal splint)

The most common and proven form of treatment. A custom-made mouthguard protects your teeth from the effects of teeth grinding, relieves pressure on the temporomandibular joints, and allows the muscles to recover.

Physical Therapy Support

Jaw problems and tension in the neck, shoulders, or head are often related. We work closely with physical therapists and coordinate additional treatment as needed.

Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Treatment (CMD)

Craniomandibular dysfunction (CMD) is a condition that is often overlooked. We diagnose and treat CMD using a structured, interdisciplinary approach—to provide lasting relief from symptoms.

Occlusal Reconstruction

In severe cases, it may be necessary to realign the bite. We restore optimal occlusion step by step and in a reversible manner—always in close consultation with you.

Frequently Asked Questions

1What symptoms might indicate a jaw dysfunction?
Typical signs include: head and neck pain, clicking or pain in the temporomandibular joint, teeth grinding or clenching, pain when chewing, limited mouth opening, tinnitus, or dizziness. If you experience any of these symptoms, please contact us.
2What is CMD?
CMD stands for craniomandibular dysfunction—a dysfunction of the masticatory system that can cause a variety of symptoms in the head, throat, and neck. It is more common than is often assumed and is easily treatable.
3Is the treatment painful?
No. The diagnostic procedure is painless, and splint therapy does not require anesthesia. In cases of acute symptoms, we take care to proceed as gently as possible.
4How long does the treatment take?
That depends on the severity of the dysfunction. Splint therapy often shows results after just a few weeks. More complex cases require a longer, step-by-step treatment plan.
5Does health insurance cover the costs?
Some functional diagnostic and therapeutic services are covered by public health insurance, particularly for TMD. More complex services, such as custom-made splints, can be billed as private services. We will provide you with transparent information about the costs in advance.
